Betty Boop For President. Betty Boop, M. D.

Two Max Fleischer cartoons that were released in 1932.

Betty Boop’s rival in the Presidential Election is “Mr. Nobody” who campaigns with his own song-and-dance routine. There are fleeting impersonations of Herbert Hoover and Al Smith, two sometime candidates for the Presidency (in ’32 the Republican Hoover was the incumbent, in fact, and at the time Smith was jockeying for the nomination at the Democratic Convention in Chicago that would put up F.D.R. instead). The mug of beer shown at the end of the cartoon represents the much anticipated Repeal of Prohibition.

Koko the Clown and Bimbo assist Betty in the hawking of “Jippo” tonic to the crowd. Fantastic “cures” ensue.
